submunition
Dispersed explosive child
A submunition is a smaller weapon released from a larger one—typically a bomblet or grenade dispersed from a cluster bomb or artillery shell.
A single munition may release dozens or hundreds of submunitions over a wide area.
Submunitions that fail to detonate on impact become de facto landmines, posing long-term danger to civilians.
