subcategorize

Classify within groups

Subcategorize means to divide a category into smaller, more specific groupings.

The term appears most often in linguistics, where it describes how words are classified by the grammatical contexts they can appear in—a verb might subcategorize for a direct object, for instance.

More generally, to subcategorize is simply to sort things that already belong to one group into finer distinctions within that group.
