sub-internship

Senior medical rotation

A sub-internship, or sub-I, is an advanced clinical rotation for medical students in their final year, where they function nearly at the level of a first-year resident.

Unlike standard clerkships, sub-interns take on greater responsibility for patient care, often carrying their own patient load and making treatment decisions under supervision: I'm doing my sub-I in internal medicine at Mass General.

The experience serves as both training and audition—students often complete sub-internships at hospitals where they hope to match for residency.
