structural element

Load-bearing part

A structural element is any component that bears weight or provides stability within a larger system—columns, beams, walls, and foundations in architecture; girders and trusses in bridges.

The term extends beyond construction: in writing, paragraphs and chapters are structural elements; in music, verses and choruses serve the same organizing function.
