stringing up

Hoisting by rope

Stringing up means hanging—either literally suspending something with string or rope, or executing someone by hanging.

You might string up Christmas lights or string up laundry to dry.

The grimmer sense evokes vigilante justice and lynching: The mob threatened to string him up.

To be strung up can also mean tense or anxious: She was all strung up before the interview.
