strike-slip
Sideways tectonic movement
Strike-slip describes a type of geological fault where two blocks of rock slide horizontally past each other rather than moving up or down.
The San Andreas Fault is the most famous example: The earthquake resulted from strike-slip movement along the fault line.
The term distinguishes this lateral motion from faults where one side rises or falls relative to the other.
