stretch-out

Lie down fully

A stretch-out is a work arrangement in which employees are required to handle more tasks or operate more machines without additional pay, effectively increasing workload while keeping wages flat.

The term emerged from labor disputes in textile mills during the early twentieth century.

More generally, a stretch-out can refer to any extension or prolongation of something: The project became a stretch-out lasting months beyond the original deadline.
