stress crack
Tension-induced fracture line
A stress crack is a fracture in material caused by internal tension rather than external impact.
These cracks develop in glass, plastic, concrete, or metal when the material is subjected to sustained pressure, temperature changes, or manufacturing defects: Stress cracks appeared in the foundation after the drought.
The term also applies to surface crazing in pottery glazes.
