A Stinger missile is a portable surface-to-air missile designed to be fired from the shoulder, used primarily against low-flying aircraft and helicopters.
The weapon locks onto heat signatures from aircraft engines.
Stingers gained prominence when supplied to Afghan fighters against Soviet helicopters in the 1980s: The rebels shot down the gunship with a Stinger.
