staying back
Holding one's position
Staying back means remaining in position rather than advancing or leaving.
In sports, it often describes defensive positioning—a fielder staying back to cover ground, or a batter not committing too soon: He stayed back on the changeup.
In education, particularly Australian and British usage, staying back means repeating a school year: She's staying back in third grade.
The phrase can also simply mean not going with others: I'm staying back to finish up.
