Staring spells are brief episodes where someone becomes unresponsive and gazes blankly into space, unable to be roused by normal stimulation.
The term appears most often in medical contexts, particularly regarding absence seizures in children: The teacher noticed her student having staring spells during class.
Unlike ordinary daydreaming, staring spells involve a lapse in awareness—the person doesn't remember the episode afterward.
