absence seizures
Momentary awareness lapses
Absence seizures are brief episodes of impaired consciousness, typically lasting five to thirty seconds, in which a person stares blankly and becomes unresponsive.
Unlike convulsive seizures, they involve no falling or jerking—the person simply "blanks out" and resumes activity afterward with no memory of the episode.
Most common in children, they may occur dozens of times daily and are sometimes mistaken for daydreaming or inattention.
