stanine
Test score band
Stanine is a method of scaling test scores into nine categories, from 1 (lowest) to 9 (highest), with 5 representing average performance.
The term blends "standard nine." Stanines simplify score interpretation by grouping results into broad bands rather than precise percentiles: Her reading comprehension fell in the seventh stanine.
Common in educational and psychological testing.
