standing eight

Mandatory protective count

A standing eight is a count in boxing where the referee stops the action to count to eight while assessing whether a fighter who remains on their feet can continue.

Unlike a knockdown, the boxer hasn't hit the canvas but appears dazed or hurt enough to warrant evaluation.

The standing eight count gives a fighter a brief recovery period while protecting them from further damage: The referee gave him a standing eight after that combination.
