stage whispering
Audible aside technique
Stage whispering is speaking in a loud whisper meant to be heard by others beyond the person you're ostensibly addressing—like an actor's aside that reaches the audience while pretending to be private.
The term comes from theater, where actors must project their "whispers" to fill a house.
In everyday use, it often carries a note of theatrical insincerity or deliberate indiscretion: She was stage whispering complaints about the host while standing three feet away.
