Staff duty is a rotating assignment in military units where a soldier remains at headquarters overnight or during off-hours to handle emergencies, answer phones, and maintain security.
The person pulling staff duty monitors the building and serves as a point of contact when regular personnel are gone: I've got staff duty tonight, so I won't make it to the party.
Often dreaded as tedious but unavoidable.
