squarings

Adjusting to right-angles

Squarings are acts of making something square or bringing things into alignment.

In mathematics, squaring is multiplying a number by itself: the squaring of three gives nine.

More abstractly, squarings involve reconciling or settling accounts: the squaring of debts, the squaring of old grievances.

The term appears in Seamus Heaney's poetry sequence of the same name.
