spread bet
Range-based financial speculation
A spread bet is a wager on whether an outcome will fall above or below a specified range.
In sports betting, the spread is a point handicap—betting on a team to "cover the spread" means they must win by more than the margin or lose by less than it: The Cowboys are favored by seven, so I took the spread.
In financial markets, spread betting means speculating on price movements without owning the underlying asset, with gains or losses proportional to how far the price moves from the quoted spread.
