split-rail fences
Zigzag wooden boundaries
Split-rail fences are rustic barriers made from logs split lengthwise into rails, stacked in zigzag or straight patterns without nails or wire.
Associated with rural American landscapes, particularly the frontier era, they enclosed livestock and marked property boundaries using abundant timber.
Lincoln's "rail-splitter" image comes from this traditional craft.
The old split-rail fence bordered the pasture.
