splakes

Lake-brook fish offspring

Splakes are hybrid fish, a cross between a lake trout and a brook trout (speckled trout).

The name blends "speckled" and "lake." Hatcheries produce splakes for stocking because they grow faster and are easier to catch than purebred trout: The lake was stocked with splakes last spring.
