spiritual communion
Sacred inner fellowship
Spiritual communion is a Christian devotional practice in which a person who cannot receive the Eucharist physically—whether due to absence from Mass, illness, or ecclesiastical restriction—makes an act of faith desiring to receive Christ spiritually.
The practice dates to medieval Catholic tradition and remains important for those unable to participate in the sacrament: She made a spiritual communion from her hospital bed.
Some traditions extend the concept to any prayerful union with the divine outside formal sacraments.
