spencers

Short waist-length jackets

Spencers is the plural of spencer, a short waist-length jacket popular in the early 19th century, worn by both men and women.

The garment was named after Earl Spencer, who supposedly had his coattails singed by fire and cut off the damaged portion.

The museum displayed several Regency-era spencers.
