spaced out

Lost in thought

Spaced out describes a state of mental disconnection—unfocused, dazed, or not fully present.

Someone spaced out might stare blankly, lose track of conversation, or fail to notice what's happening around them: Sorry, I was totally spaced out during the meeting.

The term suggests the mind has drifted elsewhere, as if into space.

It can describe effects of drugs, fatigue, or simple inattention.

The verb phrase space out works similarly: I spaced out and missed my exit.
