sou'westers
Foul weather headgear
Sou'westers are waterproof hats with wide brims that slope down in back, designed to protect sailors from rain and spray.
The name comes from the southwesterly winds that bring storms.
By extension, sou'wester can mean the wind itself or a storm from that direction.
The fishermen pulled on their sou'westers as the squall approached.
