sonar system
Sound-based underwater detection
A sonar system uses sound waves to detect and locate objects underwater.
The technology sends out pulses and measures their echoes to determine distance, direction, and characteristics of submerged objects—submarines, schools of fish, the ocean floor.
Dolphins and bats use natural sonar; human-made systems equip ships, submarines, and fishing vessels.
The sonar system detected a wreck on the seabed.
