somatized
Turned into symptoms
Somatized describes psychological distress that has been converted into physical symptoms.
When anxiety or emotional trauma manifests as headaches, fatigue, or chronic pain without clear medical cause, the experience has been somatized: Her grief somatized into back pain that no doctor could explain.
The term comes from clinical psychology, where somatization is recognized as an unconscious process—the body expressing what the mind cannot.
