soft hand

Delicate, yielding grip

In blackjack, a soft hand contains an ace counted as eleven rather than one, giving flexibility to hit without busting: I have a soft seventeen.

The hand is "soft" because it can absorb another card safely—drawing a ten on soft seventeen simply converts the ace to one, yielding seventeen rather than twenty-seven.

Contrasts with hard hand.
