hard hands
Worker's weathered grip
Hard hands is a blackjack term for a hand without an ace counted as eleven, or with no ace at all.
Because the hand's value is fixed, there's less flexibility in play: I'm showing hard seventeen, so I have to stand.
The opposite is a soft hand, where an ace can count as one or eleven.
In horsemanship, hard hands describes a rider who handles the reins roughly, lacking sensitivity to the horse's mouth.
