snakebirds

Long-necked water fowl

Snakebirds are long-necked waterbirds that swim with their bodies submerged, leaving only the head and sinuous neck visible above the surface—resembling a snake gliding through the water.

Also called anhingas or darters, they spear fish with their sharp bills and spread their wings to dry after diving.

We spotted a snakebird sunning itself on a cypress branch.
