prairie chickens
Plains-dwelling game birds
Prairie chickens are medium-sized grouse native to North American grasslands, known for the male's elaborate mating display—inflating orange air sacs on its neck and producing a booming call.
Once abundant across the prairies, their populations have declined dramatically with habitat loss.
We spotted prairie chickens doing their courtship dance at dawn.
