A smoking car is a railroad car where passengers are permitted to smoke.
Once common on trains, smoking cars were designated sections that allowed tobacco use while keeping smoke away from other passengers.
The term is largely historical, as most rail systems have eliminated smoking entirely: He retreated to the smoking car to light his pipe.
