skeletal muscles
Bones' movement engines
Skeletal muscles are the muscles attached to bones that enable voluntary movement—walking, lifting, chewing.
They work by contracting and pulling on the skeleton, usually in opposing pairs: one muscle bends a joint, another straightens it.
The term distinguishes these from cardiac muscle (the heart) and smooth muscle (internal organs).
Resistance training builds skeletal muscle mass.
