sin offerings
Ancient purification rituals
Sin offerings were animal sacrifices in ancient Israelite religion, prescribed for unintentional violations of divine law.
The worshiper would lay hands on the animal—typically a bull, goat, or lamb depending on the offender's status—before its slaughter, symbolically transferring guilt.
Blood was sprinkled on the altar, and portions were burned.
The practice ended with the destruction of the Second Temple in 70 CE.
