side chapel

Nave's smaller neighbor

A side chapel is a smaller chapel set into the wall or aisle of a larger church, usually dedicated to a particular saint, family, or purpose.

Medieval cathedrals often contain multiple side chapels along their flanks, each with its own altar: We lit candles in a side chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary.

They offer space for private prayer or smaller services apart from the main worship area.
