side aisle

Flanking church passage

A side aisle is a passageway running parallel to the main aisle in a church, theater, or other large building, typically separated from the central nave by columns or pillars.

In churches, side aisles flank the nave and provide access to side chapels or seating: The procession moved down the side aisle to avoid the crowded center.
