serving order

Course by course

Serving order is the sequence in which food or drinks are brought to guests, or the rotation determining who serves next in racquet sports.

In restaurants, serving order typically follows protocol—guests before hosts, women before men, or simply clockwise around the table.

In tennis or volleyball, serving order determines which player or team serves after each point or rotation: The umpire reminded them of the serving order.
