semisynthetic

Half natural, half-made

Semisynthetic describes substances that are partly natural and partly artificial—typically a natural compound that has been chemically modified.

The term appears most often in pharmacology, where semisynthetic drugs like heroin (derived from morphine) or many antibiotics start from natural sources but undergo laboratory alteration to enhance effectiveness or reduce side effects: semisynthetic penicillins.
