scotching

Stopping something cold

Scotching is the act of putting a stop to something or decisively disabling it.

You scotch rumors, plans, or threats by preventing them from developing further: The company's statement did little scotching of speculation about layoffs.

The word also refers to wedging something in place to prevent movement, as when scotching a wheel with a block.
