scissortail

Fork-tailed state bird

A scissortail is a bird with a deeply forked tail that opens and closes like scissors in flight.

The term usually refers to the scissor-tailed flycatcher, a striking gray and salmon-pink bird common to the south-central United States: A scissortail perched on the fence wire.

Oklahoma designated it the state bird.
