scaphoid
Thumb-side wrist bone
Scaphoid means boat-shaped, from the Greek for boat.
The term appears almost exclusively in anatomy, where the scaphoid bone is a small carpal bone on the thumb side of the wrist—the most commonly fractured wrist bone.
A scaphoid fracture often results from falling onto an outstretched hand.
