sand viper

Saharan venomous snake

A sand viper is any of several venomous snakes that inhabit sandy or arid regions, particularly species in the genus *Cerastes* found in North Africa and the Middle East.

The horned viper and Saharan sand viper are well-known examples, adapted to desert life with sidewinding locomotion and the ability to bury themselves in sand.

The term sometimes extends to similar desert-dwelling vipers elsewhere.
