salmon migration
Fish returning home
Salmon migration is the journey salmon make from the ocean back to the freshwater streams where they were born in order to spawn.
The fish travel hundreds or thousands of miles, navigating by smell and magnetic sense, often leaping upstream through rapids and waterfalls.
Most Pacific salmon die after spawning; Atlantic salmon may survive to migrate again.
We watched the salmon migration from the viewing platform.
