rough opening
Door frame hole
A rough opening is the framed gap in a wall, floor, or roof where a door, window, or other fixture will be installed.
It's deliberately sized slightly larger than the unit itself to allow for adjustments, shimming, and insulation: The rough opening for a standard interior door is typically two inches wider than the door.
Carpenters frame the rough opening before finish work begins.
