root server
Internet's top nameserver
A root server is one of the foundational DNS servers that form the top level of the internet's domain name system.
When you type a web address, root servers are the first step in translating that human-readable name into a numeric IP address.
There are thirteen root server clusters worldwide, designated A through M, that handle the initial queries directing traffic to the appropriate top-level domain servers (.com, .org, .uk, etc.).
