root canal infection
Dental pulp contamination
A root canal infection is a bacterial invasion of the pulp inside a tooth—the soft tissue containing nerves and blood vessels.
When decay or damage allows bacteria to reach this chamber, the resulting infection causes intense pain, sensitivity, and sometimes abscess formation.
The standard treatment is a root canal procedure, which removes the infected pulp and seals the tooth.
