roll-on/roll-off
Vehicles board directly
Roll-on/roll-off describes ships and ferries designed so vehicles can drive directly on and off through ramps, rather than being lifted by crane.
The term contrasts with lift-on/lift-off cargo handling.
Often abbreviated RO-RO: The roll-on/roll-off ferry carried trucks across the channel.
The same principle applies to some aircraft and rail cars.
