riot gun
Short-barreled scattergun
A riot gun is a shotgun designed for crowd control and close-quarters combat rather than hunting or sport.
Typically short-barreled with a large magazine capacity, riot guns fire less-lethal ammunition like rubber pellets or beanbag rounds, though they can also chamber standard buckshot.
Law enforcement agencies issue them for civil disturbances: Officers lined up with riot guns as protesters approached.
