A ringman is an assistant at an auction who works the crowd, spotting bids and relaying them to the auctioneer.
Ringmen move through the audience, watch for raised paddles or subtle gestures, and call out bids with distinctive shouts or hand signals: The ringman caught a late bid from the back row.
At livestock auctions especially, ringmen help maintain the rapid pace of bidding.
