Rim out describes a shot in basketball or golf that circles the rim or cup but fails to drop in, instead spinning back out: He had three shots rim out in the fourth quarter.
The ball appears to be going in, making the near-miss especially frustrating.
Sometimes shortened to rim: It rimmed out at the last second.
