rights of man
Universal natural freedoms
Rights of man is an Enlightenment-era phrase for the fundamental freedoms and dignities belonging to all human beings—life, liberty, property, equality before the law.
The phrase shaped revolutionary documents in America and France during the late 18th century.
It has largely given way to human rights, which doesn't assume maleness as the default.
